Campaigns and environment: issues to grapple with

In the campaigns and environment Action Zone there are many issues to grapple with, to help encourage action and networking to bring positive change to the West of England. Some of these are raised below.

These and other issues can be further explored in the discussion forums, or in further feature articles on the Action Zone page. Please contribute your ideas as much as you want!

Some general issues

  • Is it biblical for Christians to be involved in campaigning and to care for the environment? If so, why? If not so, why not?
  • What do you think is meant by social justice, or Micah's phrase to “act justly”?

  • What are the local, national or global campaigns you are involved with? In what ways?

  • Is it right for Christians to campaign on global issues, such as fairtrade, debt relief, trade justice, or climate change?

  • What are the arguments for and against such campaigns? Can they make a difference?

  • What style of campaigning do you think Christians should adopt: positive co-operation to bring change, non-violent non co-operation, or boycotting, or violent action? Why?

  • Should Christians lifestyles be simpler, ethical or environmentally friendly? What do you think?

  • How do you think Christians' different visions of the future affect their attitude to the environment or justice issues?

  • What are other issues to discuss?

Action and networking

  • Is it worth networking, building a movement, to tackle justice issues? Why?
  • Is it good, or not, for Christians to campaign with others of any faith or none, who have a concern for justice? Why?

  • Did a campaign like MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY bring positive change? If not, why? If it did, in what sort of ways?

  • If global justice campaigns, such as the Jubilee debt campaign, did make a difference, what are the key lessons we can learn from them?

  • It is possible to apply these lessons to bring positive change to other spheres of life as well?

  • If they did not make a difference, what conclusions do you draw?

  • How can we best work together to campaign in future?

  • What other actions or networking are needed?
