Asylum Seekers Allotment

Easter 2009 saw a small group of people take on four derelict allotments in Speedwell. The plots had not been worked for over ten years and were submerged in brambles and hawthorns.

The idea was to turn them into a garden and a haven for asylum seekers and refugees, a place which would be theirs, where they could connect with nature and the land, have the dignity and satisfaction of being able to work and be productive, a place to make new friends, and a place for healing.

After nearly a year of clearing, digging, cultivating and hoeing we now have a space that is ready for welcoming people to, and for growing enough vegetables for ten to a dozen people. If you know an asylum seeker or refugee that might want to come and along and see if this place is for them, please get in touch.
