Unchosen Fairtrade Initiative for Schools within Bristol

Running from the 2nd-30th of November 2009

Unchosen is a Bristol based charity involved in raising awareness of 21st Century Human Trafficking. As part of our work this year we are promoting a schools resource to help children understand Fairtrade. The age range recommended is 9 - 13 year olds.

What is it?

The resource consists of a Channel 4 documentary called 'Our Big Fairtrade Adventure'. The film follows 3 young teenagers as they visit India to source a new ethical school shirt, the dilemma that unfolds and the reality of child labour which shocks and confuses them.

Century Films have offered to supply the DVD for only £15 to include postage and package. We are also backing this up with a post film talk from a trained and CRB checked volunteer from the Bristol Fairtrade Network. The talk will give students the opportunity to get involved and ask Questions. The talk is fee free.

Where in the curriculum?

Fairtrade can be incorporated into a variety of curriculum subjects including English, Geography, RE, PSHE and Citizenship. The topic can be used to discuss issues such as 'fairness', global community and the economy. For example, the resource can fulfill key requirements when teaching Citizenship including the students ability to -
